The Importance of Being Ernest

By: Oliver Wilde

Finished: June 1st-ish, 2024

What's it about: The upper class of Victorian London basically fucking around, where two men life about their name and origin to women who eventually fall in love with them.

Main takeaway: Well, Wilde is interesting and I am glad I read some. Perhaps I would read more. I would also see the play if I could, as it may be a little more entertaining/understandable.

I wonder if the actual speech pattern of people at that period was really like this or if it's just more of a writing technique, but it would be interesting to know. Everyone speaks in a terse, cutting, clever way. It seems like the words people said were far more important than they are today.

Wilde was entertaining, and I am sure very funny in his day. I guess the main takeaway is not to lie and to be earnest, even though the two liars end up still getting to marry the girls, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
